Macarthur Astronomical Society

Macarthur Astronomical Society (MAS)

The Macarthur Astronomical Society, M.A.S for short, has been providing amateur astronomers with a place to call home since 1996. At its very core, M.A.S seeks to foster a deeper appreciation and understanding of the physical sciences by providing an open and interactive environment for people from all walks of life.

The Macarthur region is a fantastic location for star gazing, just a short drive out from Campbelltown or Camden will see you in an open field away from the cities light pollution. Chris detailed the history of astronomy in Macarthur, detailing how the current observing field used by M.A.S, Stargard, is named after Christian Carl Ludwig Rumker's mid 1800's observatory. Rumker was granted property west of the Nepean River in honour of his discovery of Encke's comet in 1822 and was the first to hold the title of government astronomer.

A lot has changed since 1822, astronomy has become accessible to anyone with an interest in outer space and the members of M.A.S have been fighting since 1996 to put astronomy into the heart of our community. Running active visual and photographic groups for the public, M.A.S provide guidance from experienced members who live to teach others.

Science on your door step

This blog is dedicated to all the research conducted by scientists in the Macarthur region.

Macarthur is an old area, with plenty of country charm. But in many ways it is turning into the new hotspot for scientific research. Neuroscience,  molecular biology, veterinary science, genetics, plant biology, biosecurity, clinical practice... the list goes on.

We dont often think about what it takes to produce quality scientific research. The time it takes, the collaborations, the funding. Every article is made from the blood, sweat and tears of the author's.

Hopefully this blog can help bring science from our local universities and research institutes out into the open and highlight just how amazing the work in Macarthur is.
